Search Engine Optimization

Technical SEO, on-page, editorial content, and authority — the four levers that still decide who gets clicked in Utah. Done weekly. Reported in one Looker view. No keyword-density theatre, no link-farm shortcuts.

The conventional wisdom in 2026 is that SEO is dying because of AI Overviews. The conventional wisdom is wrong. SEO is consolidating — the work that survives is the work that was always real: editorial authority, technical hygiene, named-entity clarity, and patient compounding. We have been doing exactly that work for Utah businesses since 2019 and have no plans to stop.

SEO in 2026 is not what the agency selling it to you last year said it was. Google still drives roughly two-thirds of high-intent commercial traffic for the average Utah business — but the SERP itself has changed underneath it. AI Overviews sit above the first blue link on about one in three commercial queries. Map-pack placement matters more than any single organic position. And the content cluster strategy that worked in 2021 now actively suppresses your own pages.

What still works is the boring part: a fast, crawlable site; clean information architecture; on-page that names entities and answers questions directly; editorial content written by people who actually know the category; and authority earned by being cited — in the AI surfaces, in real publications, in Google Business Profile reviews. That is what we ship across our 17 clients on weekly cadence.

Local SEO is its own discipline inside this — and in Utah it is now decisive. The Wasatch Front map pack is winner-take-all per category per city, and the signals that move it (GBP completeness, citation NAP consistency, geo-tagged on-page, review velocity) are not the same as the signals that move the standard organic listings. Halle Ng runs that side of the work. Ezra Lindquist handles the technical foundation. Marisol Quiñones writes the editorial program. The handoffs are weekly and the dashboard is shared.

The honest answer about timeline: technical wins and on-page fixes move in 30–60 days. Editorial authority and link earning compound over 6–9 months. Local SEO sits in between — a clean GBP rebuild plus citation cleanup usually moves the map pack inside a quarter. Anyone promising faster than that is selling rented signal, not earned ranking.

The signal layer is moving. Foundations still win.

  • 1 in 3

Commercial Google queries that now return an AI Overview.

Click share to traditional results is compressing — but the SERPs that still send clicks reward technical SEO more heavily than they did a year ago. Being eligible for AIO inclusion is itself a technical-SEO outcome.

  • 82 %

Of local clicks now go to the top-3 map pack.

Up from 64% in 2023. Position 4 and below collect scraps. In Utah ZIPs the gap is sharper because the Wasatch Front concentrates demand into a handful of municipal queries — "dentist Sandy", "plumber Provo", "personal injury Salt Lake City".

The system · six plays.

  1. Crawl, rendering & Core Web Vitals audit

A full technical baseline — crawl logs, rendered DOM vs. raw HTML, JavaScript-execution drift, Core Web Vitals at the URL pattern level, schema validation, canonical chains, and IndexNow eligibility. The audit ships in week one and the fixes ship across weeks two through six.

  2. Information architecture & topical map

Sitemap rebuilt around how buyers actually phrase the problem, not how the legacy URL structure happens to be organized. We collapse competing pages, retire thin content, and route internal links to the pages that should compound. Marisol leads the editorial side; Ezra ships the redirects.

  3. On-page & schema, surgical

Title tags, H1s, intro paragraphs, and FAQ sections rewritten to answer the question directly and name the entities involved. Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage, and Review schema deployed in the shapes Google and the LLMs actually reward in 2026 — stripped of the bloat that was popular two years ago.

  4. Editorial content — for citation, not impressions

Short, opinionated, named-entity-dense essays and resource pages written by humans who know the category. The point is to be the page Google quotes, not the page that ranks #4 on three thousand long-tail queries. Two pieces per quarter at Growth; six per quarter at Command.

  5. Local SEO & Google Business Profile

GBP rebuild — categories, services, attributes, geo-tagged photos, weekly post cadence, review-request workflow at the point of sale. NAP citation cleanup across the 40-source corpus that actually moves the map pack (Yelp, Apple Business Connect, BBB, BingPlaces, the chamber, the trade-association directories that count in your category).

  6. Weekly Looker report — one view

Organic sessions, map-pack positions, branded vs. non-branded share, AIO impressions, GBP actions, and pipeline attribution — pulled into the same Looker Studio dashboard your PPC and AEO metrics live in. Sent every Monday. Read in five minutes. No vanity charts.

Frequently asked · SEO specifically.

The questions Theo answers most weeks. If yours is different, the call is twenty minutes and the answer is honest.

How long until I see organic traffic move?

Technical fixes and on-page work usually show up in Search Console within 30–60 days. Editorial authority and the compounding part — the curve that bends the trailing 12-month number to +213 % — takes 6–9 months. Local SEO sits in between; a clean GBP rebuild plus citation cleanup usually moves the map pack inside a quarter.

Do you do link building?

We do not buy links, exchange links, or pay guest-post farms. We earn links — through editorial placements Brent Caldwell pitches into real Utah publications, through resource pages that actually deserve to be cited, and through the editorial program Marisol runs. It is slower than the link-farm shortcut and it does not get you penalized.

AI Overviews are eating clicks — should I still bother with SEO?

Yes, and the answer is the same one we are giving every Utah CMO right now: being eligible for AIO inclusion is itself a technical-SEO outcome. The pages getting cited inside AI Overviews are the pages with clean schema, named entities, and direct answers — exactly the work SEO has always been. The discipline did not die; the lazy version of it did.

Will you optimize Google Business Profile?

Yes, at Growth and Command. Halle Ng runs it — GBP categories and attributes, geo-tagged photos, weekly posts, review-request workflow at the front desk, and the 40-source NAP citation corpus that actually moves the Utah map pack. At Foundation, GBP is available as a £400/mo add-on if you have a single storefront.

How is this priced if my site is on Webflow vs. WordPress vs. Shopify?

It is not priced differently. The retainer covers the strategy and the work; we ship on whatever stack you are on. Ezra's team is comfortable in all three plus headless Astro, headless Next, and the older Drupal estates a handful of Utah enterprises still run. If your CMS makes a fix impossible we will tell you up front before you sign.

Will you guarantee rankings?

No, and no one honestly can. What we can show you is the track record across our 17 clients — the audits, the dashboards, the case studies on this site. Weight that, not a guarantee on a deck.

Do you outsource content to writers I will never meet?

No. Marisol Quiñones runs the editorial program and her team — three Utah-based writers, all named on this masthead — writes every word that ships under your byline. We have tested generative content for SEO and it loses citation share against human-written work in every category we have measured.

Can you take over from a national agency mid-contract?

Yes. Most of our SEO clients arrived from a national agency that was charging Utah prices for Phoenix-template work. We onboard in two weeks, audit the prior agency's work in week three, and have the first ship-list moving in week four. If your contract has a notice period we will plan the start date around it.

If your organic line is flat or sliding, we should talk.

Theo runs a 20-minute SEO baseline on your category — current technical posture, your top 30 commercial queries, your map-pack standing, and an honest read on whether a retainer makes sense for you. The call is twenty minutes and the answer is honest.
